This Must Be The Place: Practicing Divestment, Investment, and Sharing Power
SEPTEMBER 21, 2020 AT 1PM PST
The last several months have afforded Angelenos no shortage of critical questions: How can everyone, including low-income people, support local and contemporary efforts to divest? How can artists and arts institutions truly shift away from policing, white supremacy, and capitalism? This Must Be The Place will be a Conversation-Skillshare between NAVEL board members and collective residents. Part “how-to” and part brainstorming, the group will consider formations of governance and engagement such as feedback loops, community boards, and other methods that NAVEL members and community have employed in order to best share and practice kinship. The group is interested in sharing and being in dialogue with others, utilizing practices like collective decision making power, expansive membership, and timebanking to begin to work towards a daily practice of mutual aid, reparations, and/or resource sharing.
This program is most oriented towards other groups, collectives, organizers, and cultural workers who are practicing divestment, actively supporting Black, Indigenous and/or system impacted peoples’ liberation, and alternative infrastructures. However, the session will aim to be insightful and helpful to those interested and looking for an entrance to expanded community practices.
